Photosynthesis and respiration rates are quantified by spiking samples with [¹⁴C]NaHCO₃ and incubating them in the fjord for 24 h at the same depth than samples are taken out from the mesocosms (2 m depth). Two days later samples are measured in the scintillation counter and we calculate the phytoplankton ¹⁴C fixation rates.
