All material needs to be trace metal cleaned. For this purpose all the carboys, tubing, flasks etc., are washed with specific soap for 1 h, then rinsed 3 times with MilliQ water, then soaked in 10 % HCl at least 6 h, rinsed again with MQw 3x and finally rinsed twice with each mesocosm water. Washing is a tedious task that is done at night before the 6 am sampling, thus we rotate.
